Treo Applications

Treo Applications

People are often asking me what applications I have on my Treo 680, so I'll list them here.  I've added links for most applications, but the rest should be fairly easy to find with Google.  If you can't find an app below that you're interested in, feel free to email me from my Contact Page.

In case you're wondering, I've collected these over the years, $10 here, $12 there.  It has added up, trust me, and there are also some I don't list because I no longer use them.  Good thing about Palm is most programs have very reasonable trial periods in order to see if you really want a program, and a great deal of programs are free.  I've tried to identify the free ones.

  • Phone/Communications
    • Chatopus - Jabber-only IM (no schedule, no auto-reconnect)
    • Chatter - Excellent IMAP/Pop/Exchange email client
    • ChatWorks - Beta IM/IRC client
    • Dir Assistant - Phone lookup, reverse lookup, etc. Think phone book built into your Palm (uses data for lookups, no static database).  Free.
    • GoogHelper - Easy lookup program, somewhat useful but I don't use it much.  Free.
    • GooSync - Sync calendar with Google Calendar.  Free.
    • netClock - Sync time with atomic clocks.  Free.
    • PalmVNC - VNC client.  Free.
    • pssh - SSH client, v1 or v2.  Linked the Treo-specific one.  Free.
    • Reset Netlib - Resets the network stack, if data connections keep immediately failing, try exiting all data apps and run this.  Free.
    • TakePhone - Phone app/contacts replacement.  Very nice.
    • IM+ - About the only option compared to VeriChat that really has the features I need (automatic connect/reconnect/scheduled connect).  Isn't perfect but it's not bad.
    • WebMessenger - Free reasonable IM.  Has a background mode which works fairly well, reasonably battery usage.  Sometimes loses messages, but seems to be more reliable than others most often.
  • Background Apps (I keep these separate so I know what's background, in case they cause me any problems)
    • 4cast - Weather forecast, also comes with a nice Plugin for ZLauncher
    • TreoCiel - EXCELLENT Weather app for knowing exactly what rain/temp/wind is going to be at any given hour.
    • Butler - Alarms and reminders for missed events (calls, sms, alarms, etc)
    • CallRec - Voice memos, record phone calls manually or automatically, can compress the output to save space, to ram or to SD card.
    • CradleCare - If your SD card doesn't mount at boot or when you put it in, you need this.  I don't seem to need it on my 680, so only use it if it you need it.
    • CleanStart - Selectively allow specific programs to be notified of a reset.  Helps with cache a bit, but mainly just makes the Treo boot faster if you have a lot of apps.
    • CrashPro - Lets you know why your Treo crashed.  Perhaps not necessary if you have Reset Doctor (see below)
    • FindHack - Replaces Find utility, works very well.  It crashes if you use it inside the Treo 680 phone app, but nowhere else!  Legacy name, it's not a 'hack'.
    • FontSmoother - Replace fonts very easily in any specific app or all apps.  Lets you use nearly any font with a converter, very good stuff.
    • KeyGuardTime+ - Displays extra info in the keyguard screen, such as time, upcoming events, etc.  Excellent, and free.
    • LightSpeed - Reliable overclocker for modern Palm's!  650, 680, 700, 755, Centro, etc.  You can over or underclock.
    • LudusP - Palm tinkered with the whole 680 keyboard layout, you can make it act like the 650 with LudusP, plus other things.
    • ProfileCare - Lets you define timed or manual profiles.  With ScheduleCare it lets you have calendar events which do specific things, such as turn off all sounds, all vibrations, etc.  Great for work, class etc
    • Pocket Tunes - The best mp3/ogg player/streamer.  4.x is much better than the 3.x version in case you have the built-in version in the 680, it's worth replacing.
    • Reset Doctor - Automagically replaces your prefs if your Treo crashes and they get lost.  It happens.  With Reset Doctor you'll never know!  Also can track crashes, clear dbcache, more..
    • snapCalc and snapDates - Nice apps to do date calculations and simple calculator work.  If you assign 'em to the command bar they use no resource, but if you assign them to a key they use HEDE can can slow the whole Palm down.  Free.
    • SkinUI - Theme most of the Palm's buttons, scrollbars, buttons, etc.  Cute, but can slow things down.
    • VolumeCare - Increase the headset/headphone/speakerphone volume or microphone sensitivity.  Really required for the Treo 650, helps with the 680 but not as necessary.
    • ZLauncher - Excellent Launcher replacement, file manager, etc.  Lets me manage the handful of apps I have ;).  Lets you save a lot of ram by moving apps and data to the SD card.
    • Hi-Launcher - Excellent compliment to ZLauncher, pops up a user-defined menu in any application.  Expensive, but I had to have it after I used the trial for a while!
  • GeoCaching/GPS
    • CacheMate - Quite good Geocaching database.  I personally prefer GeoNiche.
    • CetusGPS - General GPS tool, track, waypoints, etc.  Like a normal GPSr basically.  Free.
    • CotoGPS - Similar to CetusGPS but each has their own strengths.  Free.
    • Coordinates - Helps with Multis, lets you put in a formula then plug in the values to calculate puzzle caches/multis/etc on the fly.  Free.
    • EarthComber - Free maps, waypoints, routing, etc.  Excellent free program for navigation.  Website lets you upload waypoint, I used to use it for it for navigating to Geocaches.  Now I use TomTom.
    • GeoNiche - The best Geocaching tool, period.  Does it all.  Only weakness is a cache database that's persistent, such as notes separate from Cache notes.  Otherwise, does it all.  Comes with Java tool to convert from GPX or LOC files.
    • GoogleMaps - Excellent google maps right on the Treo.  Uses LOTS OF DATA so if you don't have an unlimited plan, be very careful.  Free.
    • KMLCreator - Creates a track file to display on Google Earth.  CotoGPS can do this too, with an intermediate conversion process.  Free.
    • Mimee - Coordinate conversion program.  Free.
    • MyLocation - Uses data from GSM GRPS/Towers to get an approximate location to feed into Google Maps.  Usually within 1 mile.
    • TomTom - The premier navigation program, can't beat it, but it's expensive.  For a free, but more limited navigation program, see EarthComber.
    • Where Am I? - Grabs coordinates from your GPS and plugs them into Google Maps so you can see where you are.  Sort of gives Google Maps GPS capability.  Free.
  • Applications
    • 2Day - Today screen.  Once they let it show multiple lines it'll be more useful IMO.
    • Agendus - Excellent Calendar replacement, but pretty complicated
    • BlueMoon - Track events that happen every "blue moon".  Change air filter, trim the bushes, etc.  Free.
    • Colorize - Fine tune the menu and various colors on the screen.  Free.
    • CorePlayer - Commercial version of TCPMP, plays movies quite well.  Can play mp3's but not its strength. TCPMP is free, CorePlayer is not.
    • EasyNotes - Decent Memo replacement.  But no search!?
    • Resco Explorer - Nice file manager.
    • Filez - Decent file manager, not as obvious how to use, but free.
    • Life Balance - Excellent time/todo manager.  Has a very good desktop application too.
    • Novii Remote - Remote control program, learns, has nice databases.  680 has about 10' of range but it's nice to have when the control is AWOL.
    • NVBackup - Back up to the SD card.  Excellent.  Free.
    • pFuel - Track fuel purchases, prices, mileage, etc.  Free.
    • Resco Viewer - Nice photo viewer, quite fast.
    • Sales Warrior - Track sales and customers at various stages of the sale.
    • SplashShopper - Track shopping lists, prices, need lists.
    • WWCalc - Weigh Watcher calculator.  Kind of hard to find, but excellent and free.
  • Tools
    • 1TouchTimer - Time things like watering the yard or boiling an egg.  Free.
    • DataVizTool - Clean up Dataviz Docs to Go stuff, move its files to SD card, etc.  Free.
    • dbScan - Fix messy PIM databases, such as duplicate or corrupt entries. Free.
    • MiniTones - Convert wav files to TON files that can be used as ringtones.  With the 680 this replaces any need for Ringo etc for free.
    • PalmInternals - Look at alarms, triggers, etc.  Powerful tool.  Free.
    • PalmLight - Silly, but a white screen for impromptu flashlight.  Works decent in the dark.  Free.
    • PrefEd - Lets you edit the Saved and Unsaved preferences.  Resco Explorer can do this too, but PrefEd is a little better.  Free.
    • Snap - Capture screenshots in bmp format to the SD card.  Free.
    • Speedy - Test speed of the Treo in case you're overclocking or such, assuming any Overclocker ever comes out for the 680.  Free.
    • TeaPot - Another timer, but handy sometimes.  Free.
    • UnDupe - Remove duplicates from PIM apps.  Can work out some things that dbScan can't.
    • VFSMark - Benchmark your SD card to see what formatting works best or to benchmark your particular SD card.  Free.
    • YAMP - Yet Another Mirror Program.  Mostly useful for another improptu flashlight.  Free.
  • Text
    • A-Lex - Excellent and very complete dictionary/thesaurus.
    • AvantGo - "Static RSS Reader".  You sync up the feeds and can read them on the go.  Can also do online reading or web browsing.  Free.
    • Documents to Go - Lets you edit/view Office documents.
    • Keyring - Secure encryption of passwords and info.  Can sync with JPilot with GNU KeyRing.  Free.
    • Note Studio - Excellent Wiki-like meta note program.  Syncs well with its desktop application.   Can easily link between notes, create hierarchies, etc.
    • Palm Fiction - The best Palm Doc/txt/etc reader.  Combine with makeztxt to compress txt files, read books on the go.  Free.

    • SlovoEd - Multilanguage dictionary and word translations.
    • TejpWriter - Quite good program for composing long texts.  Free.
    • Tome Raider 3 - Reads a lot of Tome Raider files, lets you read a lot of free or purchased texts.
  • Games
    • ArcadeReality - Uses the built-in camera to "aim" at virtual enemies and fire various weapons at them.  Must try it to understand.
    • ASCaves - Fly through a cave that keeps getting increasingly smaller.  Free.
    • Billiards - Excellent pool game.  9 ball, 8 ball, etc.
    • BoxMan - Sokoban, quite good.  Free.
    • Enigma in the Wine Cellar - 3d game which lets you find various objects or get yourself trapped.  Interesting.  Free.
    • GravityBall - Move blocks to let a ball fall to the bottom of the screen as fast as possible.  Be careful with the screen with this one, use a screen protector!
    • iRogue - Rogue for the Palm.  Fun for killing time.  Free.
    • Lemmings - Unfortunately limited Lemmings clone.  Plays very well.  Free demo.
    • Little John PalmOS - The premier handheld game emulator.  Plays SNES, NES, GB, and others.  Only works on the 650 with UHDM, works great on the 680 without it.  Free!!

    • pJongg -Typical Pjongg game, tiles are a little small but works well.  Free.
    • Patience - LOTS of card games in one.  Free.
    • Pegged - Peg game, jump one, remove it, etc.  Try to leave only 1.  Free.
